About

GaryMyersGary D. Myers is a writer, artist and aspiring archaeologist living in New Orleans. He currently serves as the Director of Public Relations at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Gary received three Baptist Communicators Association awards for writing and photography for his coverage of the Hurricane Katrina aftermath. He and his wife Kimberly have one son, Jonathan.

Originally from Calvin, Oklahoma, Gary majored in communication and minored in art at Southeastern Oklahoma State University in Durant earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. He also earned a Master of Divinity degree at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Gary is currently studying for the Master of Arts (Biblical Archaeology) at NOBTS.

Gary began drawing as a young child and never stopped. In college Gary focused on watercolor painting and continued working primarily in that medium for the next several years. Flowers, nature and buildings were common subject matter. Gary rarely painted between 2000 and 2007 while he studied theology, established his writing career and adjusted to the demands of parenting.

Inspired by the ongoing Hurricane Katrina recovery, Gary begin painting again in 2007. The first painting, called “Street Signs,” was painted on canvas paper with a limited supply of nearly dried up acrylic paint. The work captured the sense of place in New Orleans and the fundamental role art and music plays in the life of the city and set Gary’s creative mind in motion. Gary went through tons of paint, canvas and coffee creating close to 100 painting of street signs and fleurs-de-lis since 2007. And for the first time in his life, he is actually making money with his art.
